Is there a bible for ambulance billing?

I would venture to say "yes!"

The bible for ambulance billing is Chapter 10 of the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual.

It is fun weekend reading? Not really.

But if you want to successfully run an ambulance billing program, you need to know the Medicare manual backwards and forwards.

In particular, the EMS industry has widely adopted the rules and standards outlined in the Medicare manual as the standard for all ambulance billing, regardless of payer source.

Furthermore, the Medicare manual defines key terms like "emergency response," "specialty care transport," and more.

At a high level, chapter 10 outlines vehicle and crew requirements, necessity and reasonableness, destination requirements, air ambulance services, joint responses, coverage guidelines for ambulance service claims and implementation of the ambulance fee schedule.
